The Library

Mei-mei’s Lamp, 1989
wood, drywall screws and electrical fixture with mold-blown glass shade
21 x 16 x 16 inches
edition of ten, each with unique shade

The Smell of Trees, 1990
cast aluminum, ceramic and light fixture
19 x 20 1/4 x 15 inches
edition of 10

When this work was first made, Tuttle considered it sculpture, and raised it on a pedestal. As often happens with this artist andÊ his work, on seeing the piece again years later, he realized that one detail needed to be changed: he shortened the cord, deciding that it is very important that the plug rest just on the rim of the platter. The Smell of Trees can be installed on the floor or, as we use it here in the gallery, on a table. In either case, it's a beautiful piece, elegant both in form and material. The hand-formed platter, slightly off the oval and wavering in its height, is reminiscent of Tuttle's early wood pieces.

The Garden

Grandeur, 1990
watercolor & graphite on graph paper
16f x 21f inches

"I would be happy to build this (a trellissed arbor with garden benches) for any client who had the mountain range, lake and space, for free, if they had money for materials.
--May 13, 1990"

This is a proposed free outdoor installation by Tuttle, which he presented us, in the form of a watercolor and pendant note, as part of our exhibition, "The Garden." We’ve yet to find someone whose landscape fits the qualifications.
