Prototype for Bitch Lounge, 1999
welded chrome-plated steel base with tufted leather upholstery
24 x 36 x 24 inches
Sachs's urgent sense of the pop, material world, so present in his sculpture, is equally shown here, though the reference is differently chosen, very refined, and very polished. It is little known that Sachs worked with Frank Gehry on the hockey-stick furniture. His knowledge and elegance as a designer are overwhelmingly evident in this piece. Referring to classic modernist design, Sachs made very specific choices in design in this low-slung chaise: the weight of the rod used to make the base; the subtle curve in the back rest; the density of the foam; even the size and placement of the buttons was carefully considered and chosen. |

Untitled (Barrier lamp), circa 1992
19 1/4 x 18 1/4 x 7 inches
painted wood, painted lamp, steel braces, Lincoln electrode tube, bulb fixture, fabric-covered electrical cord with switch
This is one of six unique lamps made by Tom Sachs over a ten-year period. Cobbled together from the world's detritusa phone book, a sheet metal sign, a street barrier--the eccentric forms that Sachs assembled become a lamps only by virtue of a light bulb and electrical plug attached, lamps then at the most basic definition. They look like sculpture, but not like Sachs's sculpture. They have a great, strong energy to them, hovering on the border of work and object. |
