The group of Calder pen and ink drawings, of which this is an example, were made for Three Young Rats, a book edited by James Johnson Sweeney and first published by Calder's dealer, Curt Valentin, in 1944. The book was reprinted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1946.
